My chiropractic story - no more migraines
By Tina M. Gottlieb, D.C.
When I was 13-years-old, after months of complaining about neck and back pain, my parents took me to an orthopedic doctor, who diagnosed minor scoliosis, but there was nothing he could do for me. This is when we turned to chiropractic care. I found relief for my pain with traditional chiropractic care, but the treatment did not prevent the pain from returning.
My first migraine headache occurred two years later. This was much more severe than the recurring tension headaches I had been suffering from. For more than two weeks I was in bed, taking over-the-counter pain relievers every few hours and finding little relief. Four years later, my second migraine occurred during my undergrad college final exams. My primary physician prescribed medication that he said would relieve the pain with one dose. More than a week later, the pills were gone and the pain persisted. My doctor then referred me to a neurologist who specialized in relieving migraine headaches. I was sent home with the same prescription and remained in bed for another week. From that point on, my migraines occurred more frequently. When I was in my first semester at Palmer College of Chiropractic, my migraines began to spin out of control. Neither the chiropractic care nor the medication was doing much good. When I didn't have a migraine, I was so exhausted that it was almost impossible to study. I was beginning to wonder how I could ever complete chiropractic college or function normally.
Fortunately, a friend of mine told me about specific upper cervical chiropractic care, which had helped her. I was skeptical whether this would be better than everything else I had tried, but there was nothing to lose. When I received the first upper cervical adjustment, I had been suffering from a migraine for two weeks. Within one minute I felt a rush of warmth on one side of my face. By that evening, the migraine was completely gone. I remember my mother calling me that night to see how I felt after the new treatment. “I don’t know exactly what the chiropractor did or why it worked, but I am definitely going to find out,” I told her.
A few months later, my mom asked why I hadn't been complaining of the headaches or neck pain that she was so accustomed to hearing about. “It’s because I don’t have them anymore,” I said. The specific upper cervical adjustment had not only stopped my headaches, it also had prevented their return. I no longer felt constantly exhausted, I could think clearly, and there was no neck or back pain! I chose to do post graduate study in this area, so I could help others the way I had been helped. I continue to receive regular upper cervical adjustments, although they are not necessary as often. My entire family, including my preschooler, have benefited from upper cervical care as well.
